What to Expect at Your First Massage
If you have never had a professional massage before, it is natural to have questions. What do you wear? What do you say? Is there anything you are supposed to do? This guide walks through a typical visit to Happy Feet Relaxing so you know what to expect at every step.
Before you arrive
You do not need much preparation. A few helpful habits:
- Hydrate. Drinking water before your session helps your muscles respond well to the work. Avoid arriving right after a heavy meal. You want to be comfortable lying down.
- Arrive a few minutes early. This gives you time to complete a brief intake form and settle in before your session starts. If you book online, you can often fill out paperwork in advance.
- Know what you want. Think loosely about whether you want general relaxation or whether you have a specific area you would like addressed. Your therapist will ask.
Choosing a service
For a first visit, two services work well:
- Full body massage: a classic choice that covers the back, shoulders, legs, arms, and neck. You will be on a massage table, draped with a sheet throughout, and only the area being worked on is uncovered at any time.
- Foot reflexology: a great entry point if you prefer to stay fully clothed. You settle into a reclined chair, shoes and socks off, and the therapist works through pressure points on the feet for a deeply relaxing experience.
If you are unsure, the staff at Happy Feet Relaxing are happy to help you choose when you call or walk in.
What happens when you arrive
You will be greeted, shown to a comfortable waiting area, and asked to complete a short intake form. This covers any areas you would like the therapist to focus on or avoid, and asks about any health considerations that might affect your session. Everything you share stays private.
Your therapist will introduce themselves, review your intake form with you, and answer any questions before you begin. This is the right moment to mention preferences about pressure (lighter or firmer), areas you want focused on, and anything that is off limits.
During the session
For a table massage: you will be given privacy to undress to your level of comfort, lie down on a padded table, and cover yourself with a sheet. You are draped throughout the session. Only the area being worked on is uncovered. If at any point something feels uncomfortable, say so. Feedback is always welcome, never intrusive.
For reflexology: you stay fully clothed, sit back in a reclined chair, and remove only your shoes and socks.
The session itself is quiet, warm, and unhurried. Many people fall asleep, which is completely fine and a sign the body is relaxing deeply.
After the session
Take your time getting up. It is common to feel a bit drowsy or deeply relaxed immediately after, especially if you dozed off. Drink water over the next few hours. Some people feel a mild soreness the following day if it was their first deep-pressure session. This is normal and typically passes quickly.
